artist statement

Composed of five 11x14 black and white 120mm prints and one 11x15 silver gelatin collage, “Not The Man,” is a project that explores Holder’s personal connection to masculinity and gender, and how it plays into her own identity.  The sole collage and centerpiece of the project, titled “Pieces of a Man,” features an ombre background made up of pieces of 8x10 darkroom prints, and topped off with images of Holder, including “pieces” of the artists’ body, serving as a visual representation of the fragmentation of the artists’ identity. Holder draws upon the artistry of Frida Kahlo in the piece titled “Self Portrait with Cropped Hair,” an homage to a Kahlo painting of the same name. Calling upon the iconoclast feminist painter, Holder strips away the concept of masculinity and gender down to its core. Seated mid-frame, in a suit, clasping a pair of scissors, and staring directly down the barrel of the camera, Holder takes control of her own narrative and challenges the concept of gender performance. The wads of cut hair on the floor serve as a visual representation of the stripping of presumed gender roles of women. The artist juxtaposes femininity with masculinity by portraying themselves in traditionally masculine dress in locations she deems “feminine,” namely, fields of flowers. Holder plays upon the traditional image of masculinity and flips it; not denying her own masculinity, but not wholeheartedly claiming it, instead, existing somewhere in between the binary.
